In this article I will introduce you to Search Engine
Optimization, why your Chinese website needs it, and how your business will benefit
from it in the Chinese speaking markets.
PART 1: What is Search Engine Optimization?
Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is an essential process that
enables your website to be found in top search engine positions for keyword searches
relevant to your services. With successful SEO, your site will be found in major
search engines like Google, MSN, AltaVista, ad others for your chosen keyword
phrases.
Of course most Chinese speakers do not use Google, MSN, AltaVista,
etc. as you do. There are Chinese versions of these search engines as well as
others that work with Chinese characters. Many of these Chinese search engines
do not have English versions. This article will introduce you to the important
Chinese search engines later.
Search engine optimization is often referred to as search engine
positioning, search engine ranking, website positioning, website ranking, website
optimization,... and so on. This is rather confusing as these terms actually refer
to elements that work together to get high positions for your website in the important
search engines. These main elements that make up a successful optimization campaign
include the following (this is not a complete list - there is a lot more involved.
This is just an introduction):
- Improvement of website design/structure for the search engines
- Modification of page code including title and meta tags
- Submissions to search engines and directories
- Acquiring links from other sites
- Improvement to website copy for the search engines (and visitors)
